Squarespace Acquires Google Domains: A Major Move in the Domain Registration Industry

Squarespace has acquired all assets of Google Domains, including approximately 10 million registered domains hosted on Google Domains. The acquisition is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2023. Squarespace, known primarily as a website builder, will now expand its domain registration business with these additional customers. The CEO of Squarespace, Anthony Casalena, expressed pride in being chosen to serve the customers of Google Domains and emphasized the importance of domains in a business’s online presence.

As part of the acquisition, Squarespace will become the exclusive domain provider for Google Workspace customers who purchase a domain along with their Workspace subscription from Google directly for a minimum of three years. Squarespace will also provide billing and support services to Google Workspace customers who signed up through Google Domains. Customers will retain the option to change their domain accounts as needed.

The news of Squarespace acquiring Google Domains took many by surprise, and the industry had mixed reactions. Some expressed anxiety, fear, and sadness, while others appreciated the ease of use and simplicity of Google Domains. Squarespace has stated that it will honour current Google Domain pricing for a year per the agreement.

Overall, this acquisition is seen as a natural progression for Squarespace, as many companies in the industry offer domain registration services in addition to other related services such as hosting and marketing.
